How to certify WhatsApp messages as legal evidence

The strongest WhatsApp evidence is a message you receive live while recording β€” the video captures the bubble arriving in real time from WhatsApp's servers β€” together with the phone number behind the sender's name, shown on screen. A browser session seals all of it into a timestamped, signed package. Recording old messages on their own does not prove they are genuine β€” here is the method that does.

Why a screenshot β€” or a recording of old messages β€” is not proof.

Both only show what a screen displays. Neither shows where the messages came from.

Scrolling old messages is not enough eitherWhatsApp Web and Desktop render history synced from your phone's local store β€” which the holder controls. Old messages on screen prove what the account displays, not that they were genuinely sent.

What a certified WhatsApp capture includes.

PDF

Signed PDF certificate

Affidavit summarising the session, signature, and timestamp.

β–Ά

Browser session video

Real-time recording of the WhatsApp Web conversation as it was viewed.

HAR

network.har

Network log showing the session was connected to genuine WhatsApp servers β€” not a mocked-up page.

TS

RFC 3161 timestamp

Qualified independent signature on the captured session.

#

SHA-256 hashes

Cryptographic fingerprints of the video, HAR, and PDF.

ZIP

Metadata ZIP

Manifest, signature, public key for independent verification.

Two things turn a recording into real proof.

You drive the session, so it is up to you to capture both clearly in the video.

1
The other person sends a message live, while you recordAs it arrives, the bubble pops in in real time β€” delivered by WhatsApp's servers to a genuine WhatsApp Web client. That live arrival is captured on the video and cannot be faked into a real session. A short reply back-and-forth is even stronger.
2
Show the phone number, not just the nameOpen the contact's info so the raw +number is on screen. That binds the live message to a specific WhatsApp number β€” and a number, unlike a contact name, is not something you can set yourself.

What the certificate proves β€” and what it doesn't.

We state the technical fact precisely; the court does the rest.

βœ“
Proves: live receipt from a specific numberThat a message with the visible content was received live from WhatsApp number +X (shown on screen), at the certified UTC time, in a genuine WhatsApp Web session connected to real WhatsApp servers β€” sealed tamper-evident.
βš–
Number β†’ person: established by the courtWho the number belongs to is proven downstream, by ordering the telecom operator to identify the registrant. In Belgium and much of the EU, SIM numbers are registered to an identified person. We certify the number and the live receipt; the operator and court do the identity.
βœ—
Does not prove: historical messages are genuineMessages already on screen when you opened the chat are rendered from a holder-controlled synced store, so they are not authenticated by the recording.

How to capture it, step by step.

1
Open a Browser Session and load WhatsApp WebGo to /certificates/new, select Browser Session, navigate to web.whatsapp.com, and scan the QR code with your phone.
2
Open the chat and show the phone numberOpen the conversation, then open the contact's info so the +number is clearly visible on the recording β€” not just the saved name.
3
Ask the other person to message you nowKeep recording and capture the new message arriving live β€” the bubble popping in in real time. This is the part that makes it proof.
4
Reply, and capture their live response (optional)A short live exchange both ways strengthens the record.
5
Finish session and certifyThe platform stops recording and bundles the video, HAR, RFC 3161 timestamp, and signed PDF.

WhatsApp-certification questions.

Does recording my old WhatsApp messages prove they are genuine?

No. WhatsApp Web and Desktop display message history synced from your phone's local store, which the account holder controls. So old messages shown on screen prove what your account currently displays, not that they were genuinely sent or received. For real proof, the other person must send a message live while you are recording.

How do I get court-grade proof of a WhatsApp message?

Two things during a recorded session: (1) the other person sends the message live while you record, so the video captures the bubble arriving in real time from WhatsApp's servers; and (2) you open their contact info so the phone number behind the name is shown on screen. That produces certified live receipt of a message from a specific WhatsApp number, sealed with a qualified RFC 3161 timestamp and signature.

Can you prove who owns the phone number?

We certify that a message was received live from a specific WhatsApp number at a specific time. Tying that number to a named person is established by the court ordering the telecom operator to identify the registrant β€” in Belgium and much of the EU, SIM numbers are registered to an identified person.

What if the other person will not message me live?

Then a recording can still preserve the on-screen state and show you were in a genuine WhatsApp account (useful before messages are deleted), but it will not prove that the existing messages are authentic. To preserve a full history you can certify a WhatsApp chat export instead β€” though that likewise certifies the upload and a faithful rendering, not the authenticity of the conversation.
