Does certifying a WhatsApp export prove the conversation is real?
No — and we are explicit about that. A WhatsApp chat export is plain text and media files with no cryptographic signature from WhatsApp, so anyone could edit the export before uploading it. Certifying it proves that you uploaded this specific file at this time and that the PDF is a faithful rendering of it, fixed in time and tamper-evident from that moment. It does not prove the conversation itself is genuine. For the hardest-to-dispute WhatsApp evidence, use a recorded browser session inside your own logged-in WhatsApp.
What is the difference between certifying an export and recording a session?
An export captures the full conversation in one file and is the easiest way to preserve a long chat, but its authenticity cannot be verified. A recorded session becomes real proof only for a message the other person sends live while you record, with their phone number shown — not for messages already in the chat. Many people do both: the export for completeness, a live recording for the message that matters.
Does the export include the full history and media?
WhatsApp's "Export chat" gives you the whole conversation as text, and you can choose to include media or export without it. We render the text transcript, embed photos inline, and reference the other attachments. The certificate records exactly what was in the file you uploaded.
Can a WhatsApp export be tampered with?
Yes — the export is just a text file, so it can be edited before upload. That is precisely why our certificate states clearly that it attests to the upload and a faithful rendering only. Once certified, the rendered PDF itself cannot be altered without breaking the signature and timestamp.
